The Assessment
Why should you have a pre pointe assessment?

A pre-pointe assessment is a crucial step for any aspiring ballet dancer, as it significantly reduces the risk of injury. Pointe work is highly demanding on the body, particularly the feet, ankles, and legs.
By undergoing a thorough assessment, dancers can ensure that they have the necessary strength, flexibility, and technique to handle the rigors of pointe work safely.
This evaluation typically includes an examination of the dancer's alignment, range of motion, and muscular balance, which helps identify any potential weaknesses or imbalances that could lead to injury if not addressed. Longevity in dance is another key benefit of a pre-pointe assessment.
Starting pointe work prematurely or without proper preparation can lead to chronic injuries and long-term damage, which may cut a dancer's career short.
By taking the time to assess and adequately prepare, dancers can build a solid foundation that supports a long and healthy dance career.
Safety and prevention are at the heart of a pre-pointe assessment.
Ballet is an art form that demands precision and control, and the transition to pointe work represents a significant milestone that should not be rushed.
By implementing a pre-pointe assessment, dance instructors can ensure that their students are physically ready and equipped with the necessary skills to perform safely on pointe.
This proactive approach not only safeguards the dancer's immediate well-being but also fosters a culture of safety and awareness within the dance community, promoting healthier practices and reducing the incidence of dance-related injuries.

What is involved in a pre pointe assessment?

-
Students will need a parent of guardian with them for the assessment
-
Students are asked to wear their ballet uniform with convertible tights so that feet and ankles can be assessed
-
Each assessment is approx 45 minutes
-
Several key componentes are tested with the dancer. Including: strength, flexibility, endurance, range of movement and proprioception.
-
The students are included in every way of the assessment, encouraged to ask questions, details of testing and results broken down to better understand their own feet and bodies.
-
The student receives tailored advice plus an individual strength and conditioning program specific to their needs.
-
If the student is 'ready' for pointe work, their achievement is celebrated with a certificate. If it decided that the student should wait a bit longer before beginning pointe work, there will be lots of correspondance and support to ensure that they achieve their goals.
-
Assessments can be claimed through private health if podiatry extras are included in the policy.
It is pleasure to work with dancers. They are so in-tune with their bodies, aware of muscles, balance and posture. This bodily awareness allows them to execute intricate choreography with precision and grace.
